Refreshing Mango Cardamom Lassi

A cooling traditional Pakistani drink perfect for breaking Ramadan fasts or beating summer heat

This aromatic lassi combines the tropical sweetness of ripe mangoes with the distinctive floral notes of green cardamom pods. Originating from the Punjab region, this beverage has been a staple in South Asian households for centuries, offering both refreshment and digestive benefits during hot summer months.

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe mangoes, peeled and cubed (about 2 cups / 300g)
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (240ml)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (120ml)
  • 6 green cardamom pods, seeds extracted and ground
  • 3 tablespoons honey or agave syrup (45ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.25ml)
  • 1 cup ice cubes (150g)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish
  • Crushed pistachios for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare:

  1. Prepare cardamom: Lightly crush cardamom pods with the flat side of a knife. Extract seeds and grind in a mortar and pestle or spice grinder until fine.

Blend:

  1. Blend base: In a high-speed blender, combine mango cubes, yogurt, milk, and ground cardamom seeds. Blend for 60 seconds until completely smooth.
  2. Sweeten and season: Add honey and salt. Blend for additional 30 seconds to incorporate.
  3. Add ice: Add ice cubes and pulse 3-4 times until ice is crushed and mixture is frothy.

Serve:

  1. Serve immediately: Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with fresh mint and crushed pistachios.
